David Evan Thomas
David Evan Thomas is the recipient of an Award in Music from the American Academy & Institute of Arts and Letters, a McKnight Foundation
fellowship, and the Mˆller-A.G.O. Award in Choral Composition. Thomas's music appears in the catalogues of publishers Yelton-Rhodes, E. C.
Schirmer, McGinnis & Marx, JeannÈ, MorningStar and Augsburg Fortress, and is recorded on C.R.I. and Ten Thousand Lakes labels.
Born in Rochester NY in 1958, Thomas began his training as a trumpet player, graduating from the Eastman School of Music Preparatory Department with Honors. He received degrees from Northwestern University, Eastman and the University of Minnesota, completing the Ph.D. in 1996. His principal teachers in composition were Dominick Argento, Samuel Adler and Alan Stout. During the 1980s, Thomas taught at Montana State University-Billings.
A Minnesota resident since 1989, his catalogue includes works in many media, including music for orchestra, wind ensemble, two dozen
instrumental chamber works, ten song cycles, and music for piano and organ. In 2002, two quartets Thrum for the Minneapolis Guitar Quartet
and String Quartet No. 2 "North of Spring" were premiered in the Twin Cities. In recent seasons, Thomas has served as Composer in Residence
for the Billings Symphony, Music in the Vineyards (Napa Valley, CA), Saint Paul Academy, and in 2002-2003, The Rose Ensemble.
David Evan Thomas holds The Schubert Club Composer Fellowship and is a member of the Minnesota Chorale. He lives in Saint Paul.
