Mr. Hodel has very wide musical intersts. He has performed, composed and arranged extensively in traditional classical, modern classical, jazz, pop, and Latin American styles. He began his professional career in music as a jazz guitarist, group leader, composer and arranger in Seattle, New York and Rio de Janeiro. While in Brazil he published an anthology of solo music for Brazilian style classical guitar and later a method book for Brazilian bossa nova. He then performed as a solo guitarist playing Latin American guitar music before moving on to classical guitar. His original classical guitar music is published in Europe, some of the works having been premiered at the Berlin Guitar Festival. Other of his instrumental works have been performed at the Mexico City New Music Forum.

Mr. Hodel's choral music includes a cappella settings of Blake, arrangements of Brazilian folk songs, a cantata for mixed choir and orchestra (also arranged for piano) based on mystical sprititual themes from a variety of cultures (Vision Quest), and settings from John Muir's My First Summer in the Sierra, forming a short environmental oratorio, Singing to the Earth.

The composer taught music at the college level for ten years, including six years at the School of Music at the University of Washington. He received his doctorate at UCLA where he studied choral composition with Roger Bourland and Donald Neuen.
