Dr. Donald Callen Freed, professor of vocal music and compositon at Sul Ross State University, Alpine, Texas, previously was instructor of music at Hastings College, Hastings, Nebraska, visiting instructor of voice at University of Nebraska-Lincoln and instructor of vocal music at Peru State College (Nebraska). He completed his Bachelors degree at Nebraska Wesleyan University and his Masters and Doctorate at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with Donna Harler-Smith. His choral conducting teachers include James F. Hedjuk and the late Lloyd Pfautsch, and he studied composition with Robert Morrow. Other studies have included the first NATS internship program with Barbara Doscher, the Institute of Vocal Pedagogy at Oberlin College with Richard Miller, and the Energy in Motion workshop and voice study at Marywood University with Dr. Thomas Houser. He was an honors alumni soloist at UNL in 2003. He is a published choral composer and music reviewer (Choral Journal). Dr. Freed received the ASCAP award for choral and vocal composition, 2001-2014. His compositions have been featured at regional and national conventions (CMS, MENC, TMEA), as have his lecture recitals and papers on voice and voice pedagogy (NATS, NMEA, and the Fourth International Conference on the Physiology and Acoustics of Singing). His articles on voice pedagogy have been featured in the Journal of Singing.
