Karlan Judd's music and lyrics have been performed across the United States and in Canada. His most recent musical Cheer Wars (music by Karlan Judd, book and lyrics by Gordon Leary) was named winner of the 2009 Richard Rodgers Musical Theater Award by a distinguished panel chaired by Stephen Sondheim, and was a finalist at the 2009 Eugene OíNeill Music Theatre Conference. The show has enjoyed one reading, two workshops and has a staged reading pending in New York City. Music from this show was featured at the National Alliance for Music Theater's Emerging Writers Showcase and The New York Theatre Barnís ìUntitledî series.

Karlan's musical Hunger, still lifes from the Donner Party Expedition (music by Karlan Judd, book and lyrics by Scott Guy) was a selection at the 2009 Chicago Stages! Festival and was produced there this past August. His musical Mrs. Smith Goes to Washington (music by Karlan Judd, book and lyrics by Robin Share) played at the Laurie Beechman Theatre in Manhattan and the Edgemar Center for the Arts in Santa Monica. Other musicals include Iím Here, Lemonade, The Case of the B-Team Cheerleader, The Rat King and others.

He has worked as a composer, conductor, orchestrator, music copyist and vocalist with artists like Annie Golden, Jake Heggie, Kent Nagano, Susan Egan, Rosemary Clooney and Sara Brightman. He was conductor of West Coast Singers from 2003 - 2006, receiving several artistic grants and performing in venues throughout Southern California and Montreal, Quebec. His choral music is published by Yelton-Rhodes Music (www.yrmusic.com). Choral commissions include Peacemaker, a 40 minute cantata for SATB chorus, childrenís chorus and soloists, and We, in memory of Matthew Shepard, Brandon Teena and James Byrd, for SATB Chorus. Awards include the Roothbert Scholars Award, The Elaine Krowne Klein Fine Arts Award and the Moremen Conducting Award. Karlan has a Master of Fine Arts degree from the prestigious NYU/Tisch School of the Arts Musical Theater Writing Program and a Master of Music degree in Conducting from UCLA, where he studied with renowned conductor Donald Neuen.
