Lloyd Burritt
(b. 1940)
Lloyd was born in 1940, received his B. Mus. in 1963 and M. Mus. in 1968 from UBC.
During 1963-64 he studied with Herbert Howells and Gordon Jacob at the Royal College of Music in London; and, during the summers of 1965 and 1966 he studied on a Fromm Fellowship with Leinsdorf and Bernstein at Tanglewood, BMC. Lloyd received a Canada Council Arts Bursary in 1968 and 1970.
Lloyd's compositions have been performed by major orchestras in Canada, the United States, England and Sweden. He is presently completing Pilgrim, an opera in two acts, based on the book by Timothy Findley.
His most recent choral compositions to receive repeated performances include:
Jesu Parvule, commissioned and performed by the Vancouver Chamber Choir, Jon Washburn director, in 1990.
For The One I Love, commissioned and performed by the Vancouver Lesbian and Gay Choir for GALA IV in Denver 1992, featuring SATB, oboe and piano. The text is a setting from Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass.
Two Great Soaring Eagles (1994), Gardener of Eden (1995), and Tell Everyone (1996) have all been commissioned and performed by the Vancouver Lesbian and Gay Choir in Vancouver, Canada.
Yellow the Sweet Ache (2000), commissioned by the Canadian Music Centre, sets five short poems by Betsy Warland for mezzo-soprano and piano. This work has been arranged for SSAA and piano (2002). |
