Alan Stringer is a native New Mexican. Presently he is music director of the First Unitarian Church of Albuquerque, accompanist for Congregation Albert (Reform Synagogue), and president of the board of Opera Southwest (Albuquerque's oldest and largest opera company). He is a composer of over 175 works and is a member of ASCAP and the Society of Gay and Lesbian Composers (based in San Francisco).The Manhattan School of Music, the University of New Mexico, and Opera Southwest have performed many of his operas.
Stringer taught creative writing, was a spokesperson for the gay community on TV and in classrooms and churches; founded the New Mexico Gay Men's Chorus and was its accompanist and manager for many years. He and his lover of 18 years were honored in 1998 for their contributions to the Gay and Lesbian community by being asked to be the grand marshals of Albuquerque's Gay Pride Parade.
