Born and raised in Chicago, Mark Lathan received his Bachelor's Degree in Performance from Northern Illinois University in 1983, where he studied trumpet with Ron Modell and jazz arranging with Frank Mantooth. He has arranged and composed music in a variety of styles for concerts, cabaret shows, musical revues, record dates and films. Seven of his jazz band compositions have been published since 1989 and he was a contributing arranger for Louis Bellson's Sacred Concerto, which was premiered at USC in 2000. He received his Ph.D. in 2001 from UCLA, where he received the Henry Mancini Award in Film Composition and studied with Roger Bourland, David Lefkowitz, and Ian Krouse. Last March his choral cantata Song of Hope received its premiere performance by the UCLA Chorale and Philharmonia under Donald Neuen.

Dr. Lathan served for five years as choir director at the First Presbyterian Church of Covina, California. Though based in Los Angeles since 1992 he returned to the Chicago area in June 2003, where he currently works as a composer, conductor, and instructor.
